Grown in the Bener Meriah region of Northern Sumatra and harvested atop the Burni Telong Volcano between 1,300 and 1,700 meters above sea level, this coffee was processed by the renowned Mahdi Usati. Mahdi is dedicated to ensuring high-quality and continued education within the Sumatran coffee industry. Mahdi's commitment is not only to sourcing and processing, but also to expanding access to education. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Gayo Cuppers Team, an organization that is dedicated to democratizing knowledge of product quality and the inner-workings of the coffee industry to Indonesian producers. Coffee education has traditionally been centered around urban areas and is oftentimes behind a paywall. However, the Cuppers Team is empowering local rural farmers through sensorial training, processing methods, roasting, and even barista skills classes. This increased access to education has empowered a new generation to stay committed to coffee farming and push Indonesian coffee further into the specialty coffee field. We are proud to be able to offer this coffee from Mahdi Usati, who was nominated for the Specialty Coffee Association 2023 Sustainability Award for his work in sourcing sustainability and education. The dedication to quality really shows in this cup. While Burni Telong has the traditional dark earthy hallmar ks of a wet hulled coffee, it is an exceptionally balanced cup. We were getting a wonderful mix of a fresh Cedar forest, the bittersweet syrupiness of Molasses, and the bright expression of Grapefruit peel.
