Gachatha factory is situated in the slopes of the Aberdare mountain range, Karundu location, Nyeri County about 150 km north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi. It rests on a 392 acre piece of land on the Pheba River, the source of water and central junction for Muthuaini, Thiriku, Gachenge, and Kianjau towns. These are the farmers that make up Chatas 1500+ membership. The location on the river makes water treatment tree and soil conservation a priority for the group leadership. Gachatha experiences moderate bimodal rainfall and temperatures here range from 13 to 24°C year-round . The main varieties of coffee grown here are SL 28, Batian, and Ruiru 11. The region has deep, fertile, well drained red volcanic soils, which are ideal for coffee production. Cherries are Brought to the washing station where they are handpicked, floated, pulped, and fermented overnight before cleaning additional soaking gravity, separation and drying on raised beds for 11 to 14 days. Beans are then hulled, polished, graded, and sized . Finally defective beans are removed either by hand or by machinery. Beans that are unsatisfactory due to deficiencies (unacceptable size or color, over-fermented, insect damaged, unhulled) are removed. In line with the rising awareness on the need to conserve the environment, Gacha co-op has dug the waste water soap pits away from the water source or the waste water is allowed to soak back into the soil. Currently the co-op does not engage in wastewater treatment. Additionally, the co-op encourages its members to plant trees on their farms.
