In 2015, Stephen Nendela moved back to his childhood home and worked with his mother to convert their six-acre sugarcane farm to coffee. After having some initial success, Stephen purchased a neglected 17-acre plot and began reviving it to further expand their coffee farm. While they named the farm Nawiri, meaning prosperity, the farm is known locally as Muinami-- Stephen's family name. Muinami continued to learn and grow, but in 2020, Stephen lost money on his coffee at auction and then received a premium the following year. Stephen sought answers by tracing and finding the buyer of his coffee, and the response he received was "your coffee is good". This ignited a fire and passion to improve consistency and evolve his coffee methods. All of his experimentation and dedication has led Muinami Estate coffees to be considered some of the best in the Western Rift Valley of Kenya.
