The Yandaro Washing station is nestled in a valley where the Yandaro river runs near the Kibira Rainforest. These conditions help maintain groundwater reserves and help provide nutritious soil to the region. There are 2,341 small coffee producers farming 22 hills that eventually get processed at the Yandaro station. One issue that coffee in Burundi faces is increasingly small coffee plantings due to aging coffee plants. Many of the farmers have trees that are over 50 years old. Many of the farms are so small that it is hard for the farmers to justify taking trees out of production to allow for 3-4 years for new trees to begin to yield fruit. To help combat this, many of the farmers work with an agricultural company called Greenco. Greenco will purchase seeds from the Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi, establish nurseries, and then sell the seedlings at or below cost to help farmers grow their farms. They also have many initiatives in environmental stewardship and helping establish socio economic stability. Greenco is extremely focused and hands on in the sustainability of coffee growing in Burundi. Yandaro has also been showing up really well for us from the cupping table to Fetco and pour over. We are excited to see how it is on espresso. We have high hopes. Yandaro has proven to be a rich cup with notes of Peach Sorbet, Cinnamon Roll, and Shiso.

A bag of Rising Star Coffee with a light orange label that reads Yandaro - a coffee from Kayanza, Burundi.
